I've been asked versions of this many times. There's a standard answer: intelligence is a composite measure of cognitive ability — memory, reasoning, processing speed, verbal comprehension, and so on. Recite that, and you've technically answered the question. But I paused. Because I realized: that answer says nothing. It describes what we use to measure intelligence, not what intelligence is. It's like defining temperature as "the number a thermometer produces" — technically true, completely unsatisfying. So I tried to go a layer deeper.
